Personal Story

Double the Love, Double the Everything

·5 min read·By Sam

Two cribs. Two Baby Breezas. Two of everything. And two tiny humans who had absolutely no interest in making things easy for anyone.

When I first took on this family, I will be honest — everyone was nervous. The parents were navigating the beautiful, overwhelming chaos of bringing home not one newborn but two. I was learning their rhythms, their cues, their individual personalities, all at the same time. There was a lot of grace extended in every direction those first few weeks, and I think we all needed it.

A boy and a girl. Fraternal twins, which meant they looked nothing alike and, as I quickly discovered, acted nothing alike either. He was loud about his needs — a crier who wanted you to know, immediately and without ambiguity, that something was wrong. She was quieter, more watchful, the kind of baby who would study your face before deciding whether to trust you. I fell in love with both of them in completely different ways.

And then, before we had even found our footing, both babies got sick. Hospital stays for both of them, early on. I remember the weight of that — the fear that settles into a room when tiny, fragile people are unwell. The parents were exhausted and scared, and I made a decision that I was going to be there. Not just as a care provider clocking in and out, but as a steady presence for this family during one of the hardest stretches of their lives. You show up. That is what you do.

"Two Baby Brezzas were a genuine gift from the universe. I would have written them a thank-you card."

Once we were home and on the other side of it, the real work began. Overnight care for twins is its own category of challenge. The goal — the dream, really — is to get them on the same schedule. Feed together, sleep together, wake together. In theory, elegant. In practice, you are often feeding one while the other decides this is the perfect moment to remind you they also exist and have opinions. I learned to move fast. I learned to stay calm when fast was not fast enough. I learned that a second pair of hands would have been nice, but one very determined pair could figure it out.

Two Baby Brezzas were a genuine gift from the universe. If you have never used one, it is a formula-prep machine that dispenses a perfectly warmed bottle in seconds. With twins, seconds matter. I became deeply, personally attached to those machines. I would have written them a thank-you card.

Four months of full-time overnight care. Four months of learning two completely different little people — what settled each of them, what set them off, how to read the difference between a hungry cry and an overtired one, how to get them both back down after a 3am feed without waking the other. By the end, I knew them. Not just their schedules — I knew them. The way he would finally relax when you held him a certain way. The way she would reach up and grab your finger and hold on like she was making sure you were still there.

When that chapter ended, I felt something I had not quite felt before in my work. Not just satisfaction — pride. Real, quiet, earned pride. Overnight newborn care is the hardest thing I do. It asks everything of you: your patience, your focus, your physical endurance, your emotional steadiness. Doing it for two at once, navigating hospital scares and schedule chaos and the particular joy of watching two little personalities emerge side by side — that was the experience that made me understand what I am actually capable of.

To that family: thank you for trusting me with the two most important people in your world. I think about those babies often. I hope they are still giving each other a hard time — in the best possible way.
